Are You a Businessman or a Business Athlete?

The Case for a Winning Diet

For the past 10 years, I’ve been a fitness enthusiast, always trying to stay active. The medium however, ranges from gym, yoga or running, need or mood basis. While my career isn't that of a professional athlete, I’ve always believed that a healthy mind and body are crucial for success in any field, including business.

I used to think that as long as I exercised regularly and stayed active, I could eat whatever I wanted, and it wouldn’t affect my performance at work. After all, my job doesn’t demand that I count calories or meticulously track my nutrients.

This belief changed when I stumbled upon a few articles discussing the "athlete mindset". An athlete's primary goal is to perform at their best, and to achieve that, they not only work out rigorously but also pay close attention to their diet, sleep, and overall lifestyle. Everything they do is geared toward maximising their performance. The thought didn’t leave me for a few days.

What if we, as business professionals, adopted the same mindset?

The "Athlete Mindset" for Business.

Having an athlete mindset means treating your profession with the same level of dedication as an athlete treats their sport. Just like an athlete, a businessperson also has to perform at their peak. The most critical task for any business leader is to make effective decisions. To make good decisions, you need two things: clear thinking and adaptive knowledge.

Adaptive knowledge can be achieved through continuous learning — reading every day, staying informed, and exploring new ideas. But what about clear thinking? That’s where the right diet and exercise come into play.

The Role of Diet in Business Performance

A clear mind requires proper nutrition. While I've always been consistent with my exercise, I've struggled with maintaining a strict diet. I used to think that diet wasn’t as critical as other habits in my professional life. However, I've realised that what I eat directly impacts my ability to think clearly, manage stress, and maintain energy levels throughout the day.

A strict diet isn't necessary for a business professional, one might think. After all, we’re not competing in sports events, right? But, consider this: business is a game of mental endurance, requiring sharp decision-making, creative problem-solving, and sustained focus. If nutrition can enhance these abilities, why wouldn’t it be a priority?

Look at some of the most successful business leaders today. Many of them treat their bodies with the same care and precision as a top athlete would. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, starts his day with exercise at 5 a.m. Richard Branson attributes his productivity to staying active and eating well. They understand that their bodies and minds are tools that need to be in peak condition to drive their businesses forward.

In my opinion your current habits impact your performance. If you want to be at the top of your game, maybe it's time to approach your career with the mindset of an athlete — which means not just working hard, but also fuelling your body with the right food.

So, I ask you which side do you lean on? Should every businessman follow a strict diet or not?
